Amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown, all modes of public transport except the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses have been shut down. These buses have been ferrying essential workers who are on the frontlines in the battle against coronavirus.
Mumbai's BEST bus services have been beneficial during the coronavirus outbreak. It has helped doctors, nurses, government officers and other essential workers reach their workplaces on time. Every day, amidst the lockdown, BEST has been running 1300 buses in Mumbai thereby playing an important role in the crisis.
Sharad Ghorpade, Driver with the BEST, said, "We feel this is an extremely important responsibility and people eagerly wait for us. We feel that we are playing an important role in providing this important service."
Ashok Dhatrak, a bus conductor added, "Yes, this is a big responsibility and people have always noticed this. In every situation and in every problem, BEST has been the ‘Red Fairy’ and will always be there, 24x7 to serve the people of this city. We cannot be scared of Coronavirus and we cannot stay at home. It is our duty to serve the people contribute during these times. Only then, people who are currently working like hospital staff, cleaning staff will also be able to reach where the help is needed. They are dependent on us. We are doing everything possible to offer our services and have even done a lot beyond the usual. Our authorities have given us the directions and we are following them. We will continue doing so. This is our determination."
