With Mumbai’s metro projects currently delayed by up to a year in some cases, the Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced that a total of six metro coaches will arrive in the city on December 11. The MMRDA will source the coaches from Bengaluru-based Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML).

BEML has recently put out a tender on its website for the transportation of the coaches from Bengaluru to Mumbai. These coaches will eventually be placed at Mumbai’s Charkop depot as per the MMRDA.

“We will be receiving 378 coaches in different batches. The first train set of six coaches is likely to be delivered on December 11. By April 2021, we will be having 10 train sets in Mumbai,” MMRDA commissioner, RA Rajeev said.

The BEML will schedule the transportation of six coaches/cars in November and December, while an additional 12 coaches will be reportedly transported to Mumbai in January 2021. It is said that 18 cars will be delivered every month after this period.

As per current estimates, the MMRDA’s Metro-2A that covers Dahisar-DN Nagar and Metro-7 covering Dahisar East and Andheri East will reportedly be ready by May 2021. The deadline was revised by an additional six months recently as almost every infrastructure project in the city was halted due to the coronavirus pandemic that hit the city in March this year.

These metro coaches sourced from BEML will be fully air-conditioned and will have dedicated seats for the specially-abled and elderly while also offering space for bicycle storage. The coaches will also consist of conveniently placed charging points for mobile devices and laptops.
