In order to expedite the widening work of the Mumbai-Goa highway, a section will remain closed for six hours each day till April 3.

The Parshuram Ghat section of the highway in Ratnagiri's Chiplun will be closed from 12 noon to 6 pm. Hence, the vehicles on this route will be diverted to other routes during the partial closure.

Under the state Public Works Department, the work through this national highway division will be carried out by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

The Parshuram Ghat section is about 5.40 km long, and the work for its 1.20km stretch is still pending. The 4.20 km of this section has already been concretised and is open to commuters.

The work on the remaining 1.20 km stretch was delayed for various geographical reasons, as it falls in hilly terrain.

At times, landslides occur in this region during the unseasonal rains. Upto 25 meters of the hill will be excavated. During the excavation, chances of boulders and earth falling on the highway cannot be ruled out hence the route will be closed.

The four-laning of the highway is being carried out under the 1622-km-long economic corridor between Mumbai and Kanyakumari. This 470 km-long road project that connects Panvel in Navi Mumbai to Pollem in South Goa is expected to be thrown open to the public by mid-2023.

Once fully operational, this highway is expected to cut down the Mumbai-Goa travel time to seven hours from the current 12 hours.
