On Tuesday, December 15, Congress leader and Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Vijay Waddetiwar hinted that the train services for the general public could resume from January 1.

While speaking to the media during the assembly session, he also said that the government is thinking on those lines and appropriate arrangements are being made.

The situation of Maharashtra and Mumbai is slowly coming back on track. It may take some time, and there won't be any problem in the resumption of Mumbai local trains from January 1, 2021, assured the minister. The Congress leader also said that the city is currently stuck due to lack of local train services.

Recently, the Railway Passengers' Associations had demanded that the state government should allow everyone to commute. They stressed that the general public should now be allowed on railways without using the reason of 'crowding'. Rising fuel prices, which have touched INR 90/ litre in the city, are making it more difficult and expensive for the common man to travel by road. In addition, due to traffic jams, commuters have to spend hours on the roads to reach their destination.

Earlier, reports stated that the local trains were expected to start for all the people by mid-December. On December 10, a statement was released from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clearing the rumours, whereby Mumbai Municipal Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal had stated that the services would only begin in the new year, i.e. 2021.

Currently, local train services are being used by essential workers, women, and selected professionals. People of Mumbai have been waiting eagerly for city's lifeline, Mumbai Local Train services, to resume its operations. However, the railways and the local body have not allowed the general public to commute in the trains.
