People of Mumbai have been waiting for city's lifeline, Mumbai Local Train services, to resume its operations, however, the railways and the local body has not been able to allow the general public to commute in the trains. The decision has not been taken in this favour despite repeated requests and protests made by the passengers, travel associations and the state's opposition parties.

Currently, local train services are being used by essential workers, women, and selected professionals. However, it is expected that the local service will soon resume for the public. Earlier, reports stated that the local trains were expected to start for all the people by mid-December, but the recently released statement from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cleared the rumours, whereby Mumbai Municipal Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal has stated that the services would only begin in the new year, i.e. 2021.

Addressing the media, Mumbai Municipal Commissioner said that it was not appropriate to start Mumbai local trains for the general public due to the safety reasons, and as a result, it is clear that Mumbaikars will have to travel by other alternative means for a few more days. However, workers from the essential services can continue their journey in the locals.

Over the last few months, several Mumbaikars stepped out of their houses during the Ganeshotsav, Dussehra and Diwali. As a result, the administration has remained worried due to the increase in the number of coronavirus cases again. In addition, the second wave of coronavirus around the world has also raised concerns and CM Uddhav Thackeray has asked the civic bodies and respective departments to prepare for the same, Discussions are being held regarding the preparations, however, the public is worried if the state would face another lockdown due to the same.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, while interacting with the people on social media, once again warned everyone regarding the rise in cases and appealed to the people to not to leave the house unless necessary. He also clarified that the administration has consistently made people aware of the possibility of the increase in COVID-19 infection during the winters.

Data released by the state health department reveals that Mumbai as of December 10, 2020, has a total of 2,87,898 cases, out of which 12,168 are active. Meanwhile, 10,929 patients have passed away due to the infection and 2,63,976 have recovered.

On the other hand, the recovery rate in the state currently stands at 93.45 per cent and the case fatality rate at 2.57 per cent.
