The Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd. (MMOPL) will introduce short-loop train services between Andheri and Ghatkopar to tackle severe overcrowding on Metro Line 1 during peak hours. The new service is expected to increase train frequency on the busiest stretch of the corridor and ease commuter congestion.
The decision follows recurring complaints from passengers over packed trains and delays on the Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar route. The issue gained renewed attention after a recent technical snag disrupted services, leading to train cancellations and overcrowding at several stations.
Under the proposed operational plan, select metro trains will run only between Andheri and Ghatkopar, where passenger demand is the highest. This will allow more frequent services on the most congested section without affecting the regular end-to-end operations on the line.
MMOPL has also proposed adding more coaches to increase the capacity of Metro Line 1. The operator is seeking approvals to procure additional rolling stock, which could pave the way for longer trains and improved passenger capacity in the future.
Metro Line 1, connecting Versova, Andheri and Ghatkopar, is among Mumbai's busiest rapid transit corridors, carrying more than five lakh passengers daily. Transport officials believe the short-loop service will provide immediate relief to commuters while longer-term capacity enhancement measures are implemented.
