The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on Thursday, May 4, announced that the newly-launched Metro Line 2A and 7 stations will soon have rooftop solar panels.

For this, prospective bidders can apply before May 24 by paying a tender security amount of INR 13.87 lakh.

According to an MMRDA official stated that by setting up rooftop solar panels at these newly-launched Metro stations and the depot, the authority aims to reduce the fossil fuel-based electricity load on the main grid and make the buildings self-sustainable to the extent possible from the point of electricity.

The MMRDA, which constructed these two Metro lines as a part of its 300 km Metro network in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, proposed setting up of the rooftop solar panels at 13 stations on Line 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) and 17 stations on Line 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar Andheri).

Apart from the 30 stations, the MMRDA has made the rooftop of the Charkop depot available for the solar panels. A total of 7,100 kW solar power generation has been proposed by the MMRDA.

Of the total, the panels on Line 2A will contribute 2,600 kW, those atop stations on Line 7 will generate 2,000 kW and the panels on the roof of the depot will generate 2,500 kW solar power, said the officials.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metro One, that runs between Versova and Ghatkopar, installed 8,987 solar panels in partnership with a private firm and the energy generated is utilised for lighting, air-conditioning, lifts, escalators, pumps, etc.

It is pertinent to note that the city’s first elevated Metro Line 1, which runs between Ghatkopar and Versova via Andheri, already has rooftop solar panels atop its 12 stations and depot, commissioned in 2017.
