Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has directed officials to ensure that Mumbai Metro Line 9 starts service by December 15 and Metro Line 4 by December 31. The instruction was given during a high-level review meeting held on Monday, October 6, at the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) office.
The meeting focused on reviewing major infrastructure projects in the Thane and Mira-Bhayandar regions. The goal was to speed up important works in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Senior officials, including TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao, MMRDA Additional Commissioner Ashwinikumar Mudgal, and MBMC Commissioner Radha Binod Sharma, attended the meeting.
Minister Sarnaik also reviewed road construction works. He directed that the 10.32-kilometre concretisation of the service road from Kapurbawdi to Gaimukh along Ghodbunder Road must be completed by December 31. He also instructed faster progress on internal road upgrades in Thane and Mira-Bhayandar, especially the stretch between the Maharana Pratap Statue and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Statue.
Sarnaik proposed developing landscaped gardens in the open spaces under metro bridges to beautify the city and prevent encroachments. He suggested that private organisations could maintain these areas in exchange for advertising rights, following the Nagpur Metro model.
To preserve the region’s cultural identity, the minister also suggested naming future metro stations after historic local communities. The idea is to keep the connection between tradition and modern urban growth. The meeting also discussed the progress of car shed projects at Dongri and Mogharpada for the smooth operation and maintenance of the upcoming metro lines.
