Mumbai has managed to make its mark in the list of 19 cities with the best public transport in the world. It featured at 19th place in the list of 19 cities; however, Mumbai is the only Indian city to make it to the list.
The list that has been released by Time Out, the publisher of global city guides. For this, the publisher polled 20,000 people in 50 cities to find out how they feel about their local mass transit systems.
On Mumbai's public transit system, Time Out said: "It’s an experience and a half, although probably one best avoided at rush hour unless you are a veteran of such scenes. Still, 81 per cent of locals say it’s easy to cross Mumbai by public transport, and the system certainly keeps the metropolis moving, with millions using the city’s buses, rickshaws, metro and taxis on a daily basis."
The city's Suburban Railways, which was the first passenger railway to be built by the British East India Company, forms the backbone of public transport for a population of 12.5 million.
Besides, with the introduction of an app called Chalo Pay, the commute by public transport in the city become a little more convenient without the need to carry direct cash.
At least 80 per cent of polled residents had to agree that it’s easy to get around their city via mass transportation to get into the list. There are other factors to consider when traveling by train or bus – namely, aesthetics.
It is pertinent to note that the list showed a not-so-surprising pre-dominance of Asian cities in the list for best public transport system. European cities also took a chunk of the accolades, with Germany's capital city Berlin topping the list.
