The motorists commuting through Mumbai-Pune Expressway, India's first access-controlled motorway, will experience an 18 per cent toll increase from April 1, according to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

As per government notification in 2004, the toll hike is implemented cumulatively at 18 per cent every three years, even if it increases by 6 per cent annually.

The new toll rates will vary for different types of vehicles. For instance, the toll for cars and jeeps will increase from INR 270 to INR 320. Meanwhile, minibuses and tempos will now pay INR 495 instead of INR 420. Two-axle vehicle tolls will increase from INR 585 to INR 685, and buses will now pay INR 940 instead of INR 797. Multi-axle trucks and machinery vehicles will be charged INR 2,165 instead of INR 1,835. Three-axle trucks using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will pay a higher toll fee of INR 1,630 instead of the current INR 1,380.

This increase has been announced by officials, who have also stated that the toll will remain unchanged until 2030 as there would not be any revision after three years in 2026.

Around 1.5 lakh vehicles ply on the Expressway every day. The Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which has been in operation since 2002, is a six-lane wide expressway and has five toll booths. The largest toll booths are situated in Khalapur and Talegaon.
