The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) threw open the coastal road on Tuesday, March 12 to the general public from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with the exception of Worli, where entry was prohibited after 5:00 pm. On day 2, around 19,803 cars chose to use the new route until 9:00 pm and 16,331 cars travelled along Coastal Road until 9:00 pm on day 1.

On day 2, more vehicles opted to make a commute through the partially opened Coastal Road. On day 1, between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm, there was the highest traffic density, with almost 30 cars moving on the road per minute. Some drivers, meanwhile, resorted to social media to discuss the traffic bottlenecks they experienced at Worli as a result of poorly thought-out temporary access points to the route.

In Worli, the BMC designated the entry point as Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk. Cars approaching from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link have to take a U-turn, which takes extra time and adds to the overall travel time for northbound traffic. People on social media brought attention to the problem after driving via the coastal road.

An X user, Pooja Suvi, posted on X about the traffic issue. She wrote, “Here we go again… SHUT #CoastalRoad until you guys can figure out how to actually handle the traffic flow.”

Another user named Akanksha Hazari, posted on X, “Literally WORST traffic I have ever experienced in Mumbai since partial opening of Coastal Road. Worli Seaface is fully jammed all day. My 45min office commute has become 2 hrs each way. NIGHTMARE! Close Coastal Road.”

Another user posted, “@mybmcCoastalRd @mybmc I though the coastal road was supposed to ease traffic?? Stuck on worli sea face for 20 mins going northbound!!”

Another user named Zaheer Memon posted on X that Worli side is facing Traffic Jam. He wrote, “Perhaps I was right in my apprehension. The bottle neck jams have already started. Worli sea face jammed to get onto the #CoastalRoad . 20 mins to get onto the coastal road. The excitement seems to be really shortlived. Whats even the sense ? @MTPHereToHelp @mybmc #MumbaiCoastalRoad.”

The 10.5-km "Dharmaveer Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road" was the first section of the coastal road, which was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on March 11. In addition to cutting down on pollution, the 53-km coastal road that is being built to Dahisar will save people time and transportation fuel, the chief minister stated during the inauguration of the Coastal Road.

The Mumbai traffic police have enforced speed limits of 80 kmph outside the tunnel, 60 kmph inside the tunnel, and 40 kmph on curves, even though the tunnel is intended for speeds exceeding 100 kmph.
