In an effort to address the persistent issue of noise pollution caused by vehicular honking, the Mumbai Traffic Police have designated June 14 as "No Honking Day".

The initiative aims to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of excessive honking on human health and environmental noise pollution.

On June 14, 2023, Mumbai witnessed the implementation of "No Honking Day" with the Traffic Control Branch spearheading the event. During this day, drivers will be encouraged to ensure that their vehicle horns comply with Rule No. 119 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules of 1989. This regulation stipulates the permissible sound levels and technical specifications for vehicle horns.

However, it is important to note that certain exceptions apply to the "No Honking Day" rule. Vehicles engaged in emergency services, such as ambulances and fire brigades, are exempted from the restrictions. This exemption is not limited to June 14 but extends to other days as well.

The Mumbai Traffic Police highlighted the negative consequences of noise pollution in a statement. It includes sleep disturbances, stress, and hearing impairments. Moreover, excessive noise pollution poses a significant environmental challenge, impacting the quality of life for residents. This leads to a decline in overall well-being. The authorities have taken this proactive step to combat the problem at its source.

To deter potential violators, the Mumbai Traffic Police have warned that individuals found contravening Section 194 (F) of the Motor Vehicle Act, CMVR 119(2)/177 of the MVA, and the Environment Protection Act of 1986 will face legal consequences.
