Traffic in Mumbai is a big concern for the citizens and the rise in the number of privately owned vehicles is only making matters worse. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has now announced steps to combat traffic congestion in the Sion-Panvel Highway region by constructing a six-lane elevated road between the areas of Kharghar and Turbhe at Navi Mumbai.
Most of the commuters who travel to Pune, Goa and other neighbouring parts of the city have to go through the Sion - Panvel highway and onto the Mumbai - Pune Expressway. Given the influx of traffic in the region, this is considered to be one of the busiest highways in the state of Maharashtra.
This project will reportedly cost Rs 1,222 crore, with around Rs 350 crore said to be provided by CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation) while the MSRDC and the MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) will pitch in Rs 153 crore each. The remaining Rs 611 crore will be borrowed, the authorities added.
A recent study by the IDFC institute suggested that the average Mumbaikar spends around 11 days stuck in traffic. Understandably, the situation is far worse during the monsoons. It is widely known that the state of the roads is also a factor in traffic congestion throughout the city.
As we mentioned above, the massive increase in the number of vehicles is also a major factor. Recent figures mentioned that Mumbai has 12-lakh privately owned vehicles, while the entire state of Maharashtra has around 55 lakh vehicles overall.
