Mumbaikars will have to wait for the additional 47 air-conditioned (AC) local trains as Indian Railway’s Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) have cancelled the tender issued to procure the AC trains. The procurement was part of the third phase of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3).

On November 23, the biggest train-coach manufacturer of the country cancelled the tendering process for AC locals, which was earlier scheduled to open on November 26.

According to the ICF, technical clarifications sought by Research Development Standardisation Organisation (RDSO) on the trains were the reason behind the cancellation.

These AC locals that were expected to be procured by 2020-end now will be procured six months later. On September 27, the ICF issued another tender after getting an approval from the railway board.

Currently, there is only one AC local in Mumbai that operates 12 services on a daily basis between Churchgate and Virar.
