The much-awaited Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, which has been under construction since 2011, is likely to become operational in the coming months this year. It is an extended project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

This development came to light after the commissioner of metro railway safety (CMRS) concluded the final test for the whole stretch of line one of Navi Mumbai Metro on Tuesday, May 2.

Besides, CIDCO has future plans for three more metro corridors- Metro 2, 3, and 4. These projects will be initiated only after Line 1 becomes operational.

Approval of Clearance Certificate

The project’s governing body, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), is in process to procure the Commission of Railway Safety (CMRS) certificate for the Belapur-Kharghar segment.

The upcoming 11.1 km stretch of the metro will have 11 stations. Of the total, around 5.3 km from Pendhar, Taloja to Central Park in Kharghar will be opened for public as CIDCO already has CMRS certification for Kharghar-Pendhar stretch. This means the project could see the light of the day with permission for the Belapur-Kharghar segment.

During peak hours, CIDCO intends to run the Navi Mumbai Line 1 at intervals of 15 minutes.

It is pertinent to note that the deck will be cleared for the commercial operation of the Navi Mumbai Metro only after the CMRS issues certification.

The CMRS started the final test of the whole stretch on April 17 in phases. The test was concluded on Tuesday, April 25. It included rolling stock, electrical, civic, security and others.

Navi Mumbai Metro fare

The fare of Metro line 1 starts at ₹10 and the planning agency claims that this fare is lower than the fare of air-conditioned buses of NMMT for the same distance.

Commuters will have to shell out ₹10 for a distance of up to 2 km. Similarly, from 2 to 4 km, the fare will be ₹15. For every 2 km, there is a rise of ₹5 in the fare. However, beyond 10 km, the fare will be ₹40.
