A recent examination in Mumbai revealed that nearly 347 signal poles on the Central Railway (CR) Main and Harbour lines require maintenance. Of these, around 18–20 signals are in a critical state and need immediate attention.

Mumbai has approximately 1,200 signal poles that are important for regulating rail movements. These signal poles are pivotal in ensuring safe rail operations.

The focus of the investigation was on two main aspects: the alignment of signal poles and technical malfunctions. The visibility of these signals was a point of debate last December. There were 40 signal poles that were identified as obstructing visibility.

Then, it was suggested that these signal poles be placed on the right side to improve visibility for the motormen. The rail authority is also considering mounting the signals on a gantry.

Two recent incidents where alert drivers spotted a train only a few hundred metres away have prompted the CR authorities to look at the signalling system. The goal now is to prevent such incidents.

In response, the CR authorities are exploring technological solutions to tighten the signalling system. One such solution is the Signal Location Announcement System (SILAS). This alerts the motormen when a red signal pole approaches. This technology will be installed inside the motorman cab.

SILAS has already been installed on one local train. According to a CR official, ten more rakes operating on the CSMT-Karjat/Kasara and CSMT-Panvel lines will have this equipment installed in the coming days.
