In a welcoming news, the Panvel-Borivali-Vasai suburban corridor is finally set to take shape under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) III-B after years of delays and anticipation.
The cost of the Panvel-Borivali-Vasai corridor will be INR 12710.82 crore. The objective of this route is to reduce the congestion on local trains to some extent by providing east-west connectivity.
The 69.23-km independent suburban line aims to transform daily travel for thousands of Panvel residents who currently face the hassle of changing trains at Kurla or Wadala on the Harbour Line.
This route will also be beneficial for long-distance commuters, and commuters travelling to and from norther suburbs of Mumbai. It will eliminate the need for multiple train changes offers convenience and significant time savings, especially during peak hours when congestion can turn even short journeys into marathon trips.
Unlike the current Panvel–Diva–Vasai route, the new corridor will operate independently, much like the Panvel–Karjat model, ensuring seamless connectivity and help reduce congestion.
Additionally, work is underway for the third line between Badlapur and Karjat and the fourth line between Asangaon and Kasara under MUTP - III B. A total of INR 14907.47 crore will be spent on these entire routes.
Vasai Road-Panvel suburban corridor will also be beneficial for western suburban commuters to travel from Panvel to Goa and Pune, as well as for workers in the powerloom industry in Bhiwandi, said Rajiv Singhal, member of the Western Railway Mumbai Zonal Railway Advisory Committee.
