There has been a lot of news regarding a possible suspension of air and train services on the Mumbai-Delhi route. However, the Ministry of Railways, on November 20, has clarified that no decision has been taken by the railways yet regarding the cancellation or suspension of the trains between Delhi and Mumbai.

Earlier in the day, the reports were riff that the Maharashtra government is planning to stop flights and train services from Delhi to Mumbai in the wake of rising COVID-19 cases in the national capital.

In a review meeting convened recently by Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar had discussed the COVID-19 situation in Delhi. “There are very limited train and flight services currently operating between Delhi and Mumbai. The decision to either curtail the number of services or stop them entirely will be taken in due course,” Kumar had told reporters.

Subsequently, the state government is also contemplating measures to ensure that the virus does not spread from people entering Maharashtra from other cities and states with a high infection rate.

During Diwali, Delhi witnessed a sudden spike in the coronavirus cases. Since October 28, the daily rise in the cases breached the 5,000-mark for the first time and crossed the 8,000-mark on November 11.

In the last 24 hours, ending Friday morning (November 20), Delhi recorded 7,500 new cases of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra's COVID-19 tally, as on November 19, went up to 17,63,055 with the addition of 5,535 fresh cases. With 154 lives lost, the fatality count reached 46,356. Keeping this in view, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered all schools to remain shut till December 31 as a precaution against the spread of COVID-19.
