Ministry of Railways: No Change In Existing Luggage Policy

According to the latest reports, the Indian Railways had clarified that there aren't any alterations in its luggage policy when the current policy being enforced for over 10 years. This clarification comes in the aftermath of several accounts claiming that the Railways was considering charging for extra baggage. 

The Ministry of Railways took to Twitter to say, "News item covered on some social media/digital news platforms that the luggage policy of railways has recently been changed, is incorrect. It is hereby clarified that no change has been made in the recent past and the existing luggage policy is enforced for more than 10 years.”

Based on narratives, the confusion commenced when the Ministry of Railways tweeted on May 29 that if passengers have excess baggage they would have to visit the parcel office to book the luggage. 

Its tweet read, "If there is more luggage, then the joy of the journey will be half! Do not travel by train carrying more luggage. In case of excess baggage, go to the parcel office and book the luggage."

Therefore the Railways clarified its stance that a change has not been made recently, thus, the present luggage policy is in force for over 10 years. 

It has been reported that in accordance with the rules of Indian Railways, passengers can carry heavy luggage from 40 kg to 70 kg in the train compartment along with them. This depends on the class they are travelling by.

While in the sleeper class, passengers can carry a weight of up to 40 kg, the upper limit of AC coaches is 50 kg. Similarly, in the first-class AC, passengers can take maximum baggage of up to 70 kg in the coach with them.
