Mumbai: Over 14,000 Unmasked Commuters Caught On Western Railway From April-December

Monthly statistics were released that depicted 14,812 commuters were caught without masks on the WR suburban section from April to December 2021 from whom INR 21 lakh as penalties were collected.

Western Railways (WR) and Central Railways (CR) have amped their drive from Thursday, December 30 to fine those without masks and for those who aren't adhering to the COVID-19 protocols, reports stated.

On Thursday, monthly statistics were released that depicted 14,812 commuters were caught without masks on the WR suburban section from April to December 2021 from whom INR 21 lakh as penalties were collected. On the other hand, on the CR Main and Harbour suburban sections, nearly, 2,735 commuters were caught in the same duration and fines worth INR 5.3 lakh were taken, mentioned narratives. 

In December, over one thousand travellers were collectively fined on WR and CR for not donning face masks. Reports have quoted CR chief spokesperson Shivaji Sutar who elaborated on how daily on average they catch 300 passengers for violating COVID-19 rules for the past few days.

Additionally, in the past nine months, there have been a larger number of cases and fines collected on the WR suburban section. A WR spokesperson was reported to have elucidated on how they have permitted civic marshals to visit the station premises to catch offenders.

Based on accounts, throughout Maharashtra, nearly 26,832 cases were registered on CR stations in Pune, Nagpur amongst others. Herein an aggregate fine of INR 44 lakh was collected, claimed officials.
