The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has revised the construction plan for the second phase of the Metro 5 corridor. The construction of the second phase will now take place simultaneously instead of two different phases.

MMRDA had earlier planned to construct the elevated route of the corridor separately. It was supposed to be an elevated metro and the route was to connect Kapurbawdi in Thane, travel via Thane Bhiwandi Road, then to Rajiv Gandhi chowk and finally to Rajnoli and Durgadi in Kalyan.

However, for smooth construction, the authority decided to change the plan and construct an underground road. This development came after getting the green signal from the Maharashtra government's Urban Development Department (UDD).

According to a senior MMRDA official, instead of separate tenders for construction of underground and elevated roads, a single tender will be floated to start construction. This will save time and work faster.

The Metro 5 is expected to cost ₹8,417 crore and was sanctioned by the MMRDA on December 21, 2017.

The work on 11.8 km section between Dhamankar Naka and Temghar, which is part of Phase 2 of the Metro Line 5 project, was stalled for the past four years due to locals' opposition. MMRDA had decided to start construction on the rest of the route except the disputed route due to opposition.

Metro-5 corridor is under construction between Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan. While 70 per cent of the construction on metro line between Thane and Bhiwandi has been completed, the work between Bhiwandi and Kalyan is yet to begin.

It is a 3-km underground stretch part, which is the second phase of the 24.5-km-long Mumbai Metro Line 5, connecting Thane to Kalyan via Bhiwandi.
