Western Railway (WR) has canceled plans for 15 trains on the Churchgate-Andheri slow route. The authorities had conducted a study to induct this service on the slow line of the WR. But the project did not get a green signal due to technical complications.
The Railway Ministry had asked the WR and Central Railway (CR) authorities to consider the possibility of increasing the carrying capacity of local trains from 12-car to 15-car. A local train of 15 coaches can accommodate more passengers. Also, this would have helped in reducing congestion in trains.
"Our internal study has shown that it will not be possible to extend the platform required for this project. This will require a lot of work on the network such as signal poles, tracks, points (where trains change railway tracks) and other nuances," a WR official stated.
The study also included extension of the platform on the slow line from Andheri to Churchgate.
Currently, the fast corridor can run 15 trains on the Churchgate-Virar corridor. "We are already adding the fifth and sixth railway lines to separate long-distance trains from suburban trains and extend the harbor line to Borivali," official added.
Presently, Western Railway runs 15 coach local on slow route between Andheri and Virar. A total of 199 services are operated in 15 colls, of which 83 are on fast lines and 116 are on slow lines. 70 crores to extend the length of 27 platforms at 14 stations to accommodate longer trains.
Unlike the 12-coach train, the 15-coach has limited stops on the Dadar-Churchgate route due to its short platform. Western Railway first started 15-coach services on the fast corridor between Dadar and Virar in 2009 and extended the service to Churchgate two years later after expanding platforms 3 and 4.
