In a significant development, pod taxi project will soon be launched in Thane.
Transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Wednesday, August 20, announced plans describing it as an environmentally friendly and economical transportation system that would complement the Metro network.
Speaking at a development review meeting at the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) auditorium, Sarnaik said the groundbreaking ceremony for the project would be conducted after completing legal formalities.
The proposed pod taxi network will span 52km with an estimated 63 stations. The fare structure has been kept affordable at INR 30 per person.
Pratap Sarnaik said that before starting this project on the basis of public-private partnership (PPP), legal approval and other formalities will have to be completed.
Transport experts see it as a potentially transformative step in sustainable mobility, providing last-mile connectivity in a rapidly urbanising city while reducing carbon emissions. Still, there are many doubts about this project.
