Variable Message Signs (VMS) have come to play a big role in the management of traffic all over the world. These are electronic traffic signs that are used to disseminate the much needed information on the road conditions to commuters / travellers like speed limits, accidents, traffic congestion, repair work, etc. They are also used to guide the drivers about alternative routes, traffic conditions, available parking spaces and accident spots. The latest addition in the list of various VMS is the Portable Variable Message Signs (PVMS).
However, due to increase in traffic in the city, Mumbai police has introduced the VMS devices to reduced congestion on the roads. Moreover, with this it is possible for motorists to instantly change lanes.
This device will also send real-time SMS alerts and set up electronic signages at vantage points to generate automatic warnings and guide motorists and inform them about events like traffic congestion, alternate roads, road works, accidents or speed limits. It will also deploy drones and CCTV cameras to nab traffic violators.
The VMS is fixed in one place and cannot be moved to another place as required. The VMS devices have been installed in the convoy of the traffic police. The device has WiFi, internet connection so it is easy to give instructions from the control room.
This device runs on solar energy, though it can also be charged. Even in torrential rain, fog or intense heat, the screen information on the VMS device can be seen clearly by the driver from a distance.
