Amidst the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the government of Maharashtra has taken strict measures to ensure people do not step out unless necessary. Only essential services are operational along the vaccination centres. Government offices are also open only for selected services.

With an aim to strengthen the same, Maharashtra's State Transport (ST) Department, on Friday, May 7, 2021, stated that the registration process for private bikes and cars will not be done until May 15, 2021. Furthermore, the process to issue driving license (DL) for both learning and permanent status has been cancelled across RTOs in Maharashtra.

As per reports, over 13000 vehicles are registered across RTOs in Maharashtra in a month.

Officials have stated that the decision to temporarily stop the registration process could affect the department and the economy, but ways to revive the same will soon be decided.
