Road Repair work in South Mumbai leads to traffic snarls

Traffic Jams have become a way of life for most Mumbaikars. However, residents of South Mumbai are facing more than their share of traffic as the roads in and around the area are being repaired. Mumbai Live, in their story four months ago had predicted that a situation like this would arise if the planned repair work is carried out and so it has.

As per the plan, Kemps Corner flyover in Breach Candy and Princess Street bridge at Marine Lines were to be repaired. These bridges were built in 1965 and 1967 respectively. Both these bridges need to be repaired as an audit earlier this year suggested that there are several structural defects in the bridges.

For the repair work, the stretch from Kemps Corner to St Stephen's Church signal has been made one way. The repair work was to start from December 1 as per the residents, however it began only yesterday (17th Dec). What's more painful is the fact that it might take about six months for this repair work to get completed.

Some of the commuters complained that the stretch which would earlier take about 10-15 minutes to cross has now become a 40-50 minute journey. There are also indications that suggest that the work may stretch over six months, which may make things even worse.
