The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched its first multi-level robotic shuttle parking system in the Mahalaxmi area in south Mumbai on Thursday, June 24.

The robotic car park has been developed in a high-rise tower, Hubtown Skybay building at Bhulabhai Desai Road and can accommodate 240 cars. It was inaugurated by Mayor Kishori Pednekar along with state Minister Aaditya Thackeray and Aslam Shaikh.

The 21-storey facility has been renovated and converted into an automated one using robotic technology.

According to an official, the facility has two exit and two entry points. The automatic system can manage 60 cars in an hour. The parking building will be open 24 hours.

It also has four automatic turntables, smart sensors as well as two lifts, vertical transporters and robotic silomats each.

This was passed in 2008 and was developed by a builder on build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis. It was maintained for five years by them, after which it was handed over to the BMC.

The parking lot was lying unused since 2015. Later, the civic body realised that the robotic mechanism that operates the parking lot had malfunctioned and is beyond repair. The parking lot was then shut down in March 2019.

However, now the BMC has set up a new robotic mechanism to get the parking lot working.

Officials said that the move will mitigate the problem of lack of car parking space, which is a huge challenge in a city like Mumbai.
