With the outbreak of the coronavirus and the lockdown that followed, the sale of vehicles almost sank in the state by 23 per cent.

However, due to the activity of the farm sector, the tractor sale rose by as much as 169 per cent during the same period. Although the contraction in the sale of vehicles was much sharper earlier in the lockdown, there has been some revival from the month of June as the economy started unlocking.

According to the Times of India, in August, Maharashtra reported the highest sale of passenger vehicles in the country with 23,076 registrations. This happened to be only 4 per cent lower than the sales in the month of August 2019.

Meanwhile, the Government of Maharashtra, on September 30, 2020, extended the lockdown across the state until October 31, 2020. The state had, however, allowed bars, eateries, and restaurants to reopen from October 5, 2020, with 50 per cent capacity. Dabbawallas have also been permitted to travel by the Mumbai local trains along with the ones engaged in essential services. Besides this, the government has asked railway authorities to permit additional train services, which would help reduce the crowd, especially during the peak hours in the city of Mumbai.
