Don’t be surprised if you don’t see any security guards on the newly proposed seven railway stations on the Harbour line. This is because the Government Railway Police (GRP) lack manpower.

Last week, the GRP informed the state government that it would not be able to provide security at the seven proposed railway stations and trains. These stations will come up on the extended Harbour Line section in Navi Mumbai which also covers Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA). The first four stations, connecting Seawood and Uran, are likely to be completed by July.

Additional Director General of Police (AdGP) Jai Jeet Singh said that over the years, there has been no increase in staff numbers but commuters and rail traffic is growing exponentially. He added that there has been a corresponding growth in crimes as well.

At present, there is 4,163 GRP personnel who guard coaches and platforms. It is estimated that they guard over 75-85 lakh commuters across 136 stations.
