Gesturing towards possibly one of the foremost electric bus fleet enlargements in India, the BEST has released tenders for purchasing 1,900 fully electric buses, highlighted reports.

Sources in many accounts stated that tenders will be issued in the next few days for buying 200 double-decker buses which will also be completely electric.

On Monday evening, Lokesh Chandra, BEST General Manager stated that the authority is looking to make almost 50% of its fleet electric by 2023. He added that tenders for 1,900 buses have been floated that comprise 1,400 full-length buses that will be of 12 meters, 100 minibuses as well as 400 Midi buses, elucidated narratives.

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister, Aaditya Thackeray also acknowledged this monumental step undertaken by the BEST.

According to the tender notice, the maximum duration for purchasing the 1,900 buses is a year and a half, with 25% new electric bus purchase that is 475 buses for the island city in six months, 25% in the next six months and 50% after.

The Electric Vehicle Policy of the Maharashtra government signals for the public transport undertaking to maintain 15% of its fleet as electric by 2025. Chandra, based on accounts added that the BEST has taken this instruction on a war footing. Currently, the BEST has charging stations at four depots but is looking to augment this number to all the 27 depots.
