Mumbai: First ever trial run of Metro Line 2A and & begins; To be operational from October in phases

In a relief to Mumbaikars, commuters in the western suburbs may be able to travel in Dahisar - Andheri East Metro line 7 and Dahisar - DN Nagar Metro line 2A will be soon made operational in phases.

The test run of Metro line 2A and 7 has commenced from today, May 31, in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. It will go on for four-five months after which the first phase will start in October and both the lines would be completely operational by January 2022.

MMRDA officials said that that the Chief Electrical Inspector of the Government of India (CEIG) has completed his inspection of the Over Head Equipment (OHE) line of Metro line 2A successfully for the 20-km section from Dahisar to Kamraj Nagar via video call. The total cost for the two metro lines is approximately INR 12,800 crores, of which around INR 6,000 crores have been spent to date.

Meanwhile, a few months ago, an analysis conducted by the World Resources Institute (WRI) India had shown that these two Metro lines in Mumbai can create up to 1.1 million jobs in the city provided the station areas and the surroundings are planned and executed correctly. This comes after months of lockdown and revenue losses has led to high unemployment among individuals.

As many as 13 lakh passengers from Andheri to Dahisar will get benefitted from the launch of both metro routes from October 2021. The air-conditioned driverless metro will run on Metro 2A and Metro 7 routes. One vehicle is currently in the convoy and will be tested on both routes. Another 10 trains will arrive before October 2021.

The total distance of these two corridors is comprising 35 km. The 18.5 km Metro 2 will connect Dahisar East to Andheri East through 16 stations, while Metro 7 spans 16.47 km will connect Dahisar East to DN Nagar through 13 stations. The structure of both lines will be elevated.
