With the outbreak of the pandemic, the Mumbai Local Trains had been closed in the city for nearly two months. The local trains resumed operations from June 15. In the span of an entire month, 35 lakh passengers have travelled on the Central Railways and 26 lakh on the Western Railways.
Even though the local trains were closed for nearly two months, during this period, BEST buses provided transport services for the people involved in essential services. From June 15, 362 local rounds started running on the Central, West and Harbour routes. Since then, a total of 702 local rounds and 2 memo rounds have been run. About 26 lakh 9 thousand 90 essential service personnel travelled on the Western Railway in one month. From this, Western Railway received an income of 2 crores 84 lakhs whereas about 35 lakh 46 thousand 366 essential service personnel travelled on the Central Railway. From this, Central Railway received an income of 3 crores 46 lakhs.
Meanwhile, the Railway Police are trying to ensure that proper sanitization and social distancing protocols are met while ferrying the passengers. Ropes have been put in place to make sure that the employees travel in queues. According to sources, after the railway administration completes one round of the locomotive, the cleaning staff sprays the sanitizer on the locomotive. Spraying is done on the locale from outside and inside. This locale is then used for the second round. There are several employees who have undertaken the job to sanitize the locals on the railway line. The entire locale is cleaned by these staffers. In addition, the car shed is thoroughly cleaned as well.
The locals running in the morning session are sanitized in the afternoon. These are shipped to the local car shed. In the afternoon session, the second locomotive runs on railways. At the end of all rounds of the locale, disinfectant is sprayed.
