Mumbai Suburban Network To Get More AC Locals, New Lines With ₹16,241 Cr Upgradation Project

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav underlined that these upgradations are necessary to reduce congestion on existing routes, increase services and meet the needs of suburban passengers in Mumbai.

To make travel easier for Mumbaikars, Indian Railways has initiated several projects worth over Rs 16,200 crore. The railway administration has focused on upgradation of Mumbai suburban railway network.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav underlined that these upgradations are necessary to reduce congestion on existing routes, increase services and meet the needs of suburban passengers in Mumbai.

The government has approved 12 infrastructure projects worth Rs 16,241 crore. This has strengthened Indian Railways' commitment to modernisation and enhancing regional connectivity.

These projects, including the cost and duration of each project, include:

  • CSMT-Kurla Lines 5 and 6 (17.5 km, Rs 891 crore)
  • Mumbai Central-Borivali 6th Line (30 km, Rs 919 crore)
  • Goregaon-Borivali Harbour Line Extension (7 km, Rs 826 crore)
  • Borivali-Virar 5th and 6th Line (26 km, Rs 2,184 crore)
  • Virar-Dahanu Road 3rd and 4th Line (64 km, Rs 3,587 crore)
  • Panvel-Karjat Suburban Line (29.6 km, Rs 2,782 crore)
  • Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Suburban Corridor Connection (3.3 km, Rs 476 crore)
  • Kalyan-Asangaon 4th Line (32 km, Rs 1,759 crore)
  • Kalyan-Badlapur 3rd and 4th lines (14 km Rs 1,510 crore)
  • Kalyan-Kasara 3rd line (67 km Rs 793 crore)
  • Naigaon-Juichandra double track line (6 km Rs 176 crore)
  • Nilje-Kopar double track line (5 km Rs 338 crore)

Furthermore, Indian Railways plans to introduce 238 new air-conditioned local trains with automatic doors that will improve passenger safety by reducing crowding incidents.
