The construction of the creek bridge that connects Bhayander (West) and Vasai (West) has been underway for quite some time. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority or the MMRDA has now officially taken over the construction work for this creek bridge that connects two crucial parts of the city. However, work on this bridge is only expected to be concluded by September 2024.

Estimates suggest that the cost of this creek bridge revamp which will run for a distance of 4.98km will cost around Rs 1,501.16 crore. The MMRDA has announced that it is opening tenders soon and will appoint contractors over the next months. The authorities have selected M/s. Stup Consultants to create a report on the same.

One of the major factors for the delay in the construction of this creek bridge has been salt pan lands found on its path. This, combined with the fact that it did not have enough environmental clearances pushed its construction even further. However, the authorities received in-principle approval from the Central Government to begin construction on some parts of the salt pan lands.

Once this six-lane bridge construction is completed, travel times to Vasai and Virar are expected to fall by around 45 minutes. Currently, commuters take the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway to reach these destinations.

Mumbai has undertaken multiple infrastructure projects over the past few years with multiple bridges and roads making key parts of the city more accessible to the locals. One can only hope that the MMRDA manages to meet the deadline of Sep 2024 for the Vasai - Bhayander creek bridge.
