Air-conditioned (AC) locals running on Western Railway (WR) have bought some ease to the commuters, yet, it is also causing a problem for those who travel in regular trains. Where a regular train takes nearly a 20-second halt at railway stations, the AC local train halts for nearly one minute which in turn delays the suburban trains that run on the same corridor.

With an aim to reduce the time taken in opening and closing of automatic doors of AC local trains, WR sought Integral Coach Factory’s (ICF) help. The WR has asked ICF in Chennai to make the changes for the new trains that are expected in the city by March 2019. It has asked ICF to match the time frame similar to the one on the city’s Metro corridor, where a train halts for 40 seconds.

A senior WR official said that the AC local cannot move ahead without the doors being closed and as there is a local train every three minutes on WR, it delays trains running behind them whenever the doors take time to open or close.

Recently, the Central Railway (CR) had also approached ICF to change the height of the new trains.
