Sculptor Mukesh Puro, principal of Mumbai Art College, Girgaon, Mumbai, was selected for the award of 'Fine Master Artist' in the 'International Coin Concept Competition 2023' organised by the 'Japan Mint', an independent administrative organisation of the Government of Japan. Mukesh Puro has created a coin based on carvings from Ratnagiri in Konkan.
Mukesh Puro has engraved the carvings associated with the Yantra of Rudhetali village in Ratnagiri on one side of the coin and the magnificent elephant carvings of Kasheli village on the other side. The dimensions of the coin are 12 centimetres in diameter and the thickness of the raised sculpture is 2 millimetres. It took Puro two consecutive months to make this coin.

An international coin concept competition is organised every year by the Japan Mint, an organisation of the Japanese government. Thousands of sculptors from all over the world participate in this competition and create coins based on various subjects. Mukesh Puro from Mumbai also participated in the competition held for the year 2023. First he presented the concept in July, then sent the related drawings and then in September he was told that he had been selected for the competition. After that he started making coins based on carvings.
“The 'Katal Shilpa' of Konkan should reach all over the world and everyone should be able to study our culture. So tourists and scholars from all over the world would come to Konkan and local people would get employment. My main objective was that and that's why I chose the subject of carving sculpture for the International Coin Concept Competition,” said Mukesh Puro.
