Filmmaker Amit Khanna unveiled his book 'Words. Sounds. Images: A History of Media and Entertainment in India' at Mehboob Studios in presence of Karan Johar, Javed Akhtar, Mahesh Bhat, Ronnie Screwvala, Kabir Bedi, Ila Arun and Mukesh Bhatt. Published by Harper Collins India, Words, Sounds, Images is a book that presents the history of media and entertainment in India – from the times of the Indus Valley Civilization right up to the twenty-first century.

Talking about the book author Amit Khanna said,

The book traces back to 50,000 years and delves deep into how entertainment was prevalent in those times as well. Media and entertainment are primordial human emotions because when humans were hunters and gatherers they had only two things to do: hunt and kill boredom. American author Arthur Tesler has influenced me a lot as he has written in his book that fear and boredom are two human emotions that consume everything else. Everything we do in life is because of fear and boredom. Humans have found various ways forn leisure and that's how entertainment and media play a huge role.  Also my main inspiration in writing this book is because no where in the world the spectrum of media and entertainment is as rich and wide as in India

The book starts with an examination of the origins, looking at a wide array of aspects such as the state of entertainment during Harappan and Vedic times, including details from the Natyashastra; the early drama, music and dance of Kalidasa; the development of ragas; musical instruments and early folk traditions; the genesis of classical dance forms; developments through the ages, including in the Mughal period, in the southern kingdoms, in the north-east, and under the Marathas and the British.

Post Indian Independence, the book takes a decade-wise look at the evolution of newspapers, cinema, music, television, dance, theatre, and radio. The author is himself a film producer, director and lyricist and has worked in the entertainment industry all his life and  brings his unique perspective on the subject.
