Intercast marriage is still a big taboo in India, especially in the hinterlands. We would like to claim that people have become more open today but the statistics in regards to honour killing are testimonials of the reality. ZEE5's latest movie 14 Phere deals with this sensitive topic of honour killing but to keep the story entertaining, there is a dash of honour added to it.

At the trailer launch of the movie, I had heard Devanshu Singh talk of how this movie is his tribute to Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Sooraj Barjatya. Having loved the same kind of movies, (Chupke Chupke and Khoobsorat) I had high expectations from 14 Phere. While the movie is nowhere close to these movies but it is a passable one time watch.

The plot of the movie revolves around Aditi Karwasra (Kriti Kharbanda) and Sanjay Lal Singh (Vikrant Massey). They are college sweethearts and looking forward to taking the next step in their relationship. They have already moved in and established a career for themselves in the capital city.  However, they wish to make things official. The only thing stopping them from doing so is that they belong to orthodox families. Since they are both from different cast, they are certain that their families will much rather put a bullet in them than organise a big fat Indian wedding that they are dreaming about.

Sanjay is a Rajput from Bihar and Aditi is a Jat from Rajasthan and their families won’t tolerate any alliance outside their castes. However, the two are not willing to take no for an answer and come up with an elaborate plan of getting married twice, hence the name 14 Phere. The movie revolves around the trials and tribulations the two have to face and if they are able to seal the deal or do they run away to the US as that is what Aditi feels is the only way for them.

The best thing about the movie is the performance. Vikrant Messey is a delight to watch. He is also having quite a year. Vikrant had managed to strike the right chord in Haseen Dilruba too and does a fantastic job in 14 Phere. He glides into the character so effortlessly, that you are always connected to him. Kriti Kharbanda too has done a commendable job. She looks stunning in the wedding sequences.

The other two actors that leave a lasting impression are Jameel Khan & Gauahar Khan. Their banter as the theatre actors is fun to watch and would definitely count as some of the best scenes in this movie.

The movie starts on the right note but fails to keep pace. It gets a little drab and predictable as it progresses.  While the movie is a good one time watch, better writing and more comic scenes could have made it even more delightful.
