The concept of ‘India vs. Pakistan or China’ is taking extremely serious in all the countries, and cracking jokes and mocking the neighbouring nation can go wrong, if not done well or in a subtle manner. But that’s what the director of Happy Phirr Bhag Jaayegi has attempted, and believe me, the sarcasm will crack you up!

Popular for the comedy of errors, the previous film, Happy Bhag Jaayegi, gained popularity amongst the audience and garnered a good sum at the box office. Adapting the same and attempting to win hearts again is the recent release Happy Phirr Bhag Jaayegi, starring Sonakshi Sinha, Jassie Gill, Jimmy Sheirgill, Piyush Mishra and Jason Tham. Diana Penty and Ali Fazal are also a part of the film but have a small role to play. Besides the cast, the difference in this film is the location. While the first was set in Pakistan, this one is in China!

It begins where the previous film ended, but with a confusion, and this continues until the very end of the sequel. Due to an identity crisis, a group of men from the underworld, kidnap Happy (Sonakshi Sinha), instead of the other Happy (Diana Penty). On the other hand, Daman Singh Bagga (Jimmy Shergill) and police officer Usman Afridi (Piyush Mishra) are also brought to China. A series of incidents take place, and Happy (Sonakshi Sinha) meets Khushwant Singh Gill (Jassi Gill) and tells him about all the happenings. He hesitates to be a part of it, but for the pure ‘desi’ emotions, he decides to help her and joins this chaotic ride. The idea now is only to get the new Happy out of this trouble and find out the old Happy to clarify the matter. The rest of the film is all about this journey everyone becomes a part of.

Sonakshi Sinha as Happy tries to match the expectations set by Diana Penty (who played the character remarkably), and does deliver her role fairly well. Jimmy Shergill and Piyush Mishra are hilarious. Their chemistry is adorable and many at times will leave you in splits. But the one who impressed the most is Jassie Gill. Scenes where he zones out to another world with a continuous chatter with himself, deriving references from the past, are quite well played and funny. He is sweet, innocent and witty when needed. Jason Tham as Chang is cute for an underworld gang member. Aparshakti Khurana is a surprise in the film. His role is small but has quite a good impact.

Directed once again by Mudassar Aziz, Happy Phirr Bhag Jaayegi, is a film which attempts to be as good as the first. The trailer might not have impressed initially, but the film does. The dialogues and the pun used to mock the nations in a friendly way is a brave attempt and would make you giggle for sure. I believe nothing besides a tight script, dialogues and continuity matters in a comedy film; and that’s what the makers deliver with Happy Phirr Bhaag Jaayegi. Just like their previous flick, this one too is filled with a mix of emotions, largely comic.

Overall, the film is a jolly-good ride. Pun-intended, smartly written one-liners in between add a lot of value to the quality of the script. The chaos and confusion get onto you quite quickly and the 135-minute film becomes enjoyable. This journey with convoluted conflicts is one you must ride on. Keep expectations aside. Just sit back and enjoy.
