The Central Government has decided to put a country-wide ban on bull trawling and the use of prohibited LED lights and fish light attractors on mechanised fishing vessels and motorised fishing crafts, confirmed Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh.

Bull trawling, purse-seining practices will not be entertained and to monitor the same, the coastal police will be instructed to inspect trawlers at jetties itself.

A few years ago, fishing was done by simple trawling method. However, in later years, bull trawling and purse-seining practice took over which was harming the marine life and was also destroying the mangroves.

If this type of fishing continues then there will be no fish left. I am glad that the central government announced a ban but it should be strictly implemented and followed as well,” Damodar Tandel, President, Akhil Maharashtra Machhimar Kriti Samiti (AMMKS).

Tandel added that they will protest by conducting a fake funeral of dairy development and fisheries minister Mahadev Jankar who favours purse-seining practice. He also alleged Jankar of taking a bribe from fishermen who follow the practice of purse-seining nets while fishing.
