With the oil companies witnessing a sharp increase in LPG prices, the price of a domestic gas cylinder has also experienced an increase by ₹50, as per reports.

The price of 5 kg short-cylinder has been increased by ₹18 whereas the price of a 19 kg cylinder increased by ₹36.50. In the last 15 days, the price of cylinders was hiked twice by ₹100.

According to the Indian Oil Corporation, a 14.2-kg gas cylinder will now cost ₹644 in Delhi, ₹670.50 in Kolkata, ₹644 in Mumbai and ₹660 in Chennai. Before the hike, the price of a 14.2 kg gas cylinder in Delhi was ₹594. Moreover, gas cylinders were available at ₹620.50 in Kolkata and ₹594 in Mumbai.

As per reports, Indian households are permitted a maximum of 12 LPG cylinder purchases per year at subsidized rates. Cylinders have to be bought at full price at the time of purchase, and the subsidy is then credited to the customer's bank account by the government. However, consumers have not received subsidies since the month of May due to the combination of international oil price collapse and domestic refill rate increase diminished the gap between subsidized and market rates.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had earlier planned to introduce a new method to detect gas leaks, contamination or strange odours found near the eastern suburbs. This technology will be implemented with the help of the fire department, whereby inspection will be conducted with a help of a special balloon in the contaminated areas in Mumbai.
