In a first, India has got its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) research institute which was inaugurated in Mumbai earlier this week. Wadhwani Institute for Artificial Intelligence will focus on researching ways to harness the power of AI to solve deep-rooted problems in healthcare, education, agriculture, and infrastructure to accelerate social development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the institute.

Wadhwani AI is based in Mumbai and will be partnering with the University of Mumbai as well as the Government of India that will help the institute identify problems, to create a talent ecosystem in AI and Data Science and to test and scale the solutions.

Promising an involvement on a personal basis, the Wadhwani brothers are committing $30 million to the institute over its first 10 years. They will offer their expertise in creating and scaling successful global businesses.

Indian-American tech entrepreneurs Dr. Romesh Wadhwani and Mr. Sunil Wadhwani are the founders of the institute which will be led by AI pioneer and founding MD of Microsoft Research India, Dr. P. Anandan.

According to Romesh Wadhwani, co-founder of Wadhwani AI, the key is to apply AI in all key domains such as education, public health, agriculture, infrastructure and financial inclusion in order to come up with innovative solutions that achieve large-scale positive social impact.

Wadhwani AI is the first of its kind in the world — a nonprofit research institute dedicated exclusively to applying AI for social good, to help improve the lives of millions.
