The Thane Municipal Corporation has now started a 'green signal' system for the disabled and visually impaired at the Teen Haath Naka intersection in the city.
Since a total of 7 roads converge at this place, there is a huge traffic flow. Therefore, it was decided to install this system after conducting a direct study and survey of this intersection. Special ramps and beeper systems will make it easier for the disabled and visually impaired to cross the road.
In Thane, several vehicles come on roads simultaneously at major intersections like Teen Haath Naka, Nitin Company, Cadbury Junction and Kapurbawdi-Majivda. Such small and large intersections and signals are located in various parts of the city.
Even regular commuters and bypassers face difficulties while crossing the road. Therefore, since the condition of visually impaired people is getting worse while crossing the road, the decision to implement the 'Green Signal' system was taken jointly by Thane Municipal Corporation and the Traffic Department.
As part of this campaign, the concept of creating a green signal system at intersections on roads to enable pedestrians to cross the road safely, mainly for the visually impaired and the disabled, was presented to the then Thane Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar by Dr. Vinay Kumar Rathod, former Deputy Commissioner of Police of Thane Traffic Department.
Accordingly, instructions were given to obtain quotations by conducting a site survey through various charitable organizations doing such work through the city transport department.
After a wait of almost one and a half years, the system was implemented on Monday, August 5. The disabled started the system by crossing the road safely.
