in the month of August Mumbai and the neighbouring areas have been getting a good amount of rainfall. There are seven lakes - Bhatsa, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar on Thane-Nashik belt and Tulsi and Vihar in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SNGP) which provide water to the city of Mumbai.

All these lakes have become almost full with the recent rains. Till Friday 6 am these lakes were 95.19 per cent, Bearing this in mind, the civic body has rolled back the water cut that it had imposed in the city.

BMC had announced a 20 per cent water cut on August 5. With the rains significantly improving in this week, there has been a demand for lifting the said water cut. Last week the water cut was reduced to 10 per cent. The BMC had indicated that they will withdraw the remaining 10 per cent of the water cut in a day or two once the level crosses 95 per cent. Now with the level going beyond the said 95 per cent, the civic body has decided to deliver on its promise and lift the cut that was imposed from August 29.

It is expected that it will be another rainy day for Mumbaikars on Friday and Saturday and even a yellow alert has been issued for these days.

Till Saturday morning, the Santacruz observatory recorded 990.5mm rainfall in the month of August, which is the highest that the city has got in nine years. The earlier highest rainfall was recorded in August 2010 when the city received 1,036.5mm of rainfall.
