According to the Election Commission, around 11 lakh voters' names were missing from the voters' list in the recently concluded BMC election 2017. However, only 63 complaints have been lodged regarding the same. RTI activist Anil Galgali has asked the state election department for the information of names of voters whose names were not on the voters' list in 2012 and 2017.

According to the election cell of the BMC, there were 1,02,86,579 voters in the city in 2012 whose names were missing from the list this time. 91,80,055 voters didn't get to vote as their names were not on the voters' list. In all,  there was a difference of 1 lakh six hundred and twenty-four names in the list. However, only 63 complaints have been received by the administration.

Galgali alleges that this is a serious issue. "So many names are going missing from the voters' list and voters didn’t even care to find out why their names are missing from the election data and the voters' list," he says.

Galgali further says that awareness has to be spread about the all important right to cast one's vote. People should learn about their rights, he points out.
