Mumbai: 151 Buildings Issued Notices For Flouting Fire Safety Measures In 6 Months

The notices were served under Section 6 of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006. As per this section, it is the owners’ or occupiers’ liability to provide for fire prevention and life safety measures.

According to the latest data from the Mumbai fire brigade, a total of 326 buildings were randomly inspected between between November 2021 and April 2022.

However, it has come to light that out of these, 151 buildings were issued notices for non-compliance with fire safety measures in the last six months. With this, it has been founded that 45.8 per cent of the structures are violating fire safety rules, despite several fire-related incidents being reported in the city.

Other common violations include lack of sprinklers, fire alarms and smoke detectors, the official added.

Fire officers said most of the premises where they had detected violations during the six-month inspection period were residential buildings.

Chief Fire Officer Hemant Parab said that most common violation we found is non-functional firefighting system, defunct parts of the system such as sprinklers or smoke detectors not working. In other instances, we found that the refuge area was encroached, terrace as locked, and the staircase and common passageways were encroached with household items and furniture.

In a latest incident, this week, fire at Jivesh Terrace started in a duplex on the 13th and 14th floors and was confined to the electrical duct. At least 21 residents were evacuated and a turntable ladder was used to douse the flames.
