16 NDRF teams deployed across Maharashtra, five in Mumbai amid heavy rainfall

A total of 16 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been positioned in different parts of Maharashtra for rescue efforts amid the continuous rainfall which has created havoc in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), especially Mumbai. 

Of the 16 teams, five have been deployed in Mumbai, four in Kolhapur, two in Sangli and one each in Thane, Palghar, Nagpur, Raigad and Satara districts of Maharashtra. 

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) along with the civic bodies have issued red alerts in various parts across Maharashtra warning of flood situation due to increasing rainfall. 

On Wednesday and Tuesday, Mumbai and neighbouring areas witnessed heavy rainfall. Mumbai city and its suburbs were adversely affected with waterlogging and flooding in several areas. Instances of house collapse were also reported from different parts of Mumbai. 

In 24 hours, south Mumbai received more than 330 mm rainfall as per the Colaba observatory while the western suburbs received 146 mm rainfall. Rains were reduced on Wednesday night but the IMD of heavy rainfall on Thursday. 

Earlier, the NDRF rescued more than 350 passengers stranded between Byculla and Masjid railway station near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Due to heavy rainfall, the water was accumulated on the railway tracks and NDRF team had to use a boat to rescue the passengers.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) set up temporary shelters for those who were stranded due to the waterlogging and flooding.
