In good news for Mumbai’s water supply, the Vihar Lake which supplies water to the metropolitan city has started to overflow due to the heavy downpour in the region for three days continuously.
Due to the heavy rainfall, the Vihar lake started overflowing on Wednesday around 10:00 PM. Vihar is one of the seven lakes which provide water to Mumbaikars. A few days ago on July 27, the Tulsi lake had also overflowed.
The Vihar lake is located within the boundaries of Borivali National Park and with it overflowing, the water supply crisis for Mumbai has been averted to a great extent. This happened as Mumbai, Thane and other surrounding areas receive heavy rainfall which has created havoc in the parts of the city due to flooding.
As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), out of the two lakes which supply water and are in the area of the civic body, 'Vihar Lake' started overflowing on August 5 around 10.00 pm. Last year, the lake with a capacity of 27,698 million litres of water started overflowing on July 31. In 2018, the lake started overflowing on July 16.
Among the seven lakes, Vihar and Tulsi are the two smallest lakes which supply water to Mumbai and come under the BMC. On average, 90 million litres of water is supplied daily from the Vihar lake. BMC’s water engineering department said that due to heavy rains in the recent days, the lake started to overflow.
Earlier, BMC has announced that Mumbaikars will face a 20 per cent reduction in the water supply from August 5 due to less rainfall. However, the heavy downpour has changed the course.
