The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will table proposals worth at least INR 2,300 crores before the Standing Committee for approval on Wednesday, March 1.

This development comes ahead of the BMC polls slated this year between March-April.

Moreover, this is likely to be the last meeting by the present standing committee as the BMC’s five-year term ends on March 7.

Therefore, civic body's standing committee seems to be in a rush to clear a total of 179 proposals of purchases and projects of COVID-related expenditures worth INR 2,300 crores by this week.

Of the total proposals, the majority of the proposals are from the health department wherein post facto approval of more than INR 1,000 crores was proposed in the form of COVID-19 expenditure.

For those unversed, the Standing Committee is one of the BMC's highest decision-making bodies apart from the General body. As per the provision of the municipal corporation Act, the Standing Committee can approve any financial expenditure proposal with cost of INR 50 lakh in weekly meetings.

The 27-member Standing Committee is headed by Shiv Sena leader and corporator Yashwant Jadhav who has been facing investigation from the I-T department for alleged money laundering. Owing to this, BJP has demanded that all proposals of the standing committee should be withdrawn.
