On Monday, December 20, the Standing Committee cleared proposals of development projects worth over INR 1,800 crore, reports stated. From these, significant proposals were for the development of roads in Mumbai.

According to reports, during the meeting, BJP asked that proposals for road improvements in Mumbai be kept on hold until the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) vouched for the quality. Other than this, they also asked that further information on road repair proposals be accorded.

After a discussion of over an hour, the committee cleared it. Nearly 40 proposals for road improvements were put before the committee. Previously, the same tenders were annulled post the raising of questions when contracts mentioned under 30 per cent against the estimated amount.

Based on accounts, certain major repairs of asphalt and cement concrete roads will be undertaken in locations such as Borivali, Bhandup, Vikhroli, Powai, Kurla and Kandivali. Their costs stand at INR 185 crore, INR 147 crore for Bhandup, Vikhroli and Powai, INR 157 crore and INR 122 crore, respectively.

Amid concerns about the quality of work, Sanjeev Kumar, Additional Municipal Commissioner, assured that the civic body would ensure the quality of the work. Narratives claimed that he remarked on how officers from the BMC will check the work in addition to an audit also being undertaken.
